R A D I A L
“The RADIAL Project has had a significant impact at the Glasgow School of Art. The GSA values creative disruption, a responsibility to our planet and working collaboratively, all of which have been key to the delivery of RADIAL. The project has innovative and inclusive approaches to working with students. There has been significant interest and new links to our curriculum through their work”
Professor Tom Innes, Director, Glasgow School of Art
From 2015 to 2016, RADIAL was a huge focus of my creative output. The project grew out of previous work with ARC and GSA Sustainability.
I was given the opportunity to write and design Radial for Glasgow School of Art, forming its strategy and content around permaculture design principles. I’m delighted to say that the project was successful in receiving full funding from Zero Waste Scotland for 2 years with 2 full time project co-ordinators, Eilidh Sinclair and myself.
Over the course of the project we engaged people in a number of innovative ways, including Glasgow Goes Green Festival, Zero Waste Map, Rummage, Recycle Hacks an numerous workshops and events.
As a result, in 2016, we won the prestigious Green Gown Award for sustainability engagement in the UK.

In its owns words:
R A D I A L is a collective of creative thinkers from the university community across Glasgow. Students and staff are all connected through a shared need and desire to live sustainably. We believe that climate change is a cultural issue connected to inherent values we all hold; therefore we find commonality and connection to tackle these issues together transforming current habits into meaningful habits that will build our sustainable future.
Radial’s core aim is to collectively inspire action towards a zero waste society through the exploration, practice and sharing of ideas that are rooted in the circular economy and resource efficiency. The project focused on 3 areas:food waste prevention; extended product life cycles and increased recycling.
The project centres around using systems thinking and design methodology to translate ideas into reality and to make abstract thoughts and environmental data tangible. We choose to engage with peoples intrinsic values and focus on human stories to strengthen empathy; ensuring that engagement is relevant, useable, easy and desirable for our community.
